MLS Cup Tale of the Tape: Jozy Altidore vs. Jordan Morris -

The 2016 MLS Cup will be decided on December 10 at BMO Field. Toronto FC will take on the Seattle Sounders at 8:00PM.

Throughout the week leading up to the Cup, TorontoFC.ca will be rolling out a new series called “Tale of the Tape.” The series will highlight a key positional matchup and provide you with analysis of the players. The final entry in this series is up top, with the battle between Jozy Altidore and Jordan Morris.

Jozy Altidore

Altidore made his professional debut with the New York Red Bulls as a 16-year old and scored 15 goals in 37 appearances across three seasons with the Red Bulls before being sold to Spanish side Villarreal. Altidore spent seven years in Europe, playing for Hull City in England, Bursaspor in Turkey, AZ Alkmaar in Holland, and Sunderland in England.

Altidore made his return to the MLS when Toronto FC acquired him in what amounted to a high-profile swap with Sunderland for fellow striker Jermain Defoe. The 27-year-old Altidore has made 48 appearances for the Reds over the last two seasons, scoring 23 goals. This season Altidore went on a tear in the second half, scoring ten goals in the final 14 games of the season.

Altidore has taken his play to another level in the 2016 MLS Cup playoffs. He became the first player in league history to score a goal in five straight games in the same postseason. The six-foot-one forward has also recorded four assists and has been directly involved in 52.9% of the Reds’ goals this postseason.

Jordan Morris

Jordan Morris has had a rapid rise to MLS stardom. The Seattle native spent the last three years starring at the collegiate level for Stanford. In his junior year, Morris led the Cardinal to both a Pac-12 and NCAA Championship and was awarded the Hermann Trophy as the best NCAA Division I soccer player. Morris also became the first college player to be called into a U.S. national team squad since 1999.

The 2016 MLS Rookie of the Year put together a very nice debut season. Morris made 34 appearances for the Rave Green while scoring 12 goals while adding four assists.

Morris has been a crucial part of the Sounders’ run to the 2016 MLS Cup. The 22-year-old has tallied two goals and an assist. His second goal, the game-winner in the second leg of the Western Conference championship over Colorado, capped a gutsy performance for the young forward, as Morris was suffering from the flu.
