Remembering A Strange Match vs. FC Dallas

Dallas Rain Storm

It’s finally here. Toronto FC opens the newly renovated BMO Field on Saturday night against FC Dallas.

The Toros have emerged as one of the teams to beat in the Western Conference through the first quarter of the season. This isn’t a surprise, as Óscar Pareja’s team topped the West in 2015 and lost the Supporters’ Shield on a tiebreaker.

TFC met FCD once last year, during the Reds’ seven-game road trip to start the 2015 season. Dallas raced out to a 3-0 lead in 27 minutes. Sebastian Giovinco scored twice in the second half as Toronto launched a furious comeback. Unfortunately the Reds ran out of time and Dallas secured three points.

Alright, that’s the very basic version of what transpired on April 18, 2015. A version that fails to mention the biggest story from that night.

That game was delayed a total of 206 minutes due to abysmal weather at Toyota Stadium. A combination of lighting, swirling wind and heavy rain led many to believe the game wouldn’t be finished at all.

It was a bizarre game all around. “It was very tough to come back from the delays,” said left back Justin Morrow. “Especially because we kept on coming back on the field and then going back to the locker room.”

By the time the match was actually restarted at 11:42 PM local time it had been several hours since the players’ pre-game meal.

“It was a series of events, really,” said head coach Greg Vanney. “We got off to a really bad start and then it was just a long break, and it felt it even longer because we were down three goals. There was so much downtime but then when we came back on we really went for it. To be fair we were a little unfortunate to not get the equalizer at the end.”

“It was a really long day.”

Let’s hope mother nature doesn’t have anything similar in store for us on Saturday night as TFC takes on FC Dallas in the BMO Field Home Opener.
