Three Keys: Midfield Battle

Michael Bradley and Marco Pappa are pretty familiar with each other by now. The two went head-to-head in a pair of World Cup qualifiers this week, with the United States and Guatemala splitting the series. Pappa got the better of Bradley last Friday night, when Los Chapines stunned the Americans with a 2-0 win in Guatemala City. Bradley & Co. responded in a big way on Tuesday night in Columbus, righting the ship with a comfortable 4-0 win. Both players are immensely important to their club sides, with Pappa emerging as a factor in every Colorado goal this season and Bradley serving as the catalyst in a revamped TFC midfield.

Match Notes

  • The Rapids return to league play after extending their undefeated streak to two games in a 1-1 draw at D.C. United on March 19. The Rapids have scored two goals this season; Marco Pappa has been involved in both, with a goal and an assist.
  • Toronto FC play the fourth game of their eight-game road swing to start the season, now with a 1-1-1 record to start the year following their 1-0 loss at Sporting Kansas City last time out on March 20.
  • Toronto FC won the only meeting between the teams a season ago, a 3-1 win Sept. 19 at BMO Field, snapping a two-game Colorado winning run in the series.
  • The Rapids won 1-0 on April 12, 2014 in Toronto, their first victory ever against TFC at BMO Field (the Rapids did win MLS Cup 2010 there). TFC had won the first six meetings between the teams in Ontario.
  • The Rapids’ 1-0 victory in the last meeting at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, in 2013, was their first victory against Toronto FC since 2010 in Commerce City, snapping a four-game winless streak in the series (0-3-1).
