Toronto FC Prepares for Match vs. Sporting Kansas City

Sporting Kansas City has emerged as the team to beat in the Western Conference through two games, with wins over Seattle and Vancouver. Toronto FC will look to add the first blemish to their record on Sunday at Children's Mercy Park when the two teams meet.

The Reds have taken four points through their first two games. It’s been a positive start for the club, make no mistake about it.

"It’s been a very good start,” said Sebastian Giovinco following Wednesday’s training session. “Four points mean a lot. The team can improve and play even better, and that’s the goal."

The team spent the majority of the preseason focusing on defensive structure and shape and the early returns have indicated the lessons taught in Southern California and Florida have stuck.

“So far, so good,” said defender Steven Beitashour. “It’s something we emphasized during the preseason, to focus on our shape.”

Beitashour dealt with a hamstring injury through the preseason, but he’s been able to register two 90 minute matches.

“It’s always tough not having a true preseason,” he said. “I have to give credit to [Head Athletic Therapist] Carmelo [Lobue] and the training staff for working with me everyday. They did a great job and spent a lot of off days coming in and working with me.”

Benoit Cheyrou came off the bench against New York City FC and made an instant impact, helping the Reds emerge from a languid start to the second half. Though the veteran midfielder is accustomed to starting games, his mentality coming off the bench remains the same. No matter how long it may be, 90 minutes, 30 minutes or 10, Cheyrou’s commitment to the cause is unwavering.

"If it's one minute you have to give everything in your heart on the pitch for the team,” said Cheyrou.

His teammates are big fans as well.

“He’s a very skilled player, a very experienced player,” said Giovinco. “Our team needs a player like him because it’s a young team. I’m happy Benoit got a chance to play.”

The Reds will train in Toronto on Thursday and Friday before heading to Kansas City on Saturday. Catch Sunday night's game on TSN 2 and Fox Sports 1 at 7:00 PM ET.
