Major League Soccer (MLS) announced Monday that Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco has been named as the 2015 MLS Newcomer of the Year.

The award is given to the player who has had an outstanding first season in MLS while having professional experience in another league. Giovinco becomes the first player in club history to win the award. This marks the second individual award for Giovinco this season after he claimed the 2015 Audi Golden Boot award after scoring 22 goals and added 16 assists for Toronto FC. Giovinco had a record setting year in his first season with the Reds and in MLS. He broke a 15-year-old MLS single-season record for shots in a season (181). Mamadou Diallo, 152 (2000) previously held the record. He set a new MLS record for most goals (22) and assists (16) combined in a single season, breaking Chris Wondolowski’s previous record of 27 goals and 7 assists in 2012.

He became the first player in MLS history to record at least 20 goals and 10 assists in a single season. He finished the season with the second-highest shots on goal total in a season with 73. He also set a number of club records becoming the first player in club history to record two hat tricks in MLS league play including the first by a Toronto FC player at BMO Field in MLS league play.

He is second on Toronto FC’s all-time goal list with 22 goals (MLS league play). Giovinco won back-to-back MLS Player of the Month awards for July and August. He was also named MLS Player of the Week three times this past season (Weeks 13, 14, 19). In addition, he was named to the MLS Team of the Week on ten occasions (Weeks 9, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 23, 29, 30). Giovinco also won MLS Goal of the Week for Week 23.
