3 Keys To TFC vs. New York City FC

3 keys to TFC vs. NYCFC

Toronto FC can make history on the day Dwayne De Rosario hosts his testimonial at BMO Field.

A number of former TFC notables, including De Ro, Danny Dichio and Danny Koevermans, will be on hand for TFC’s first ever match against New York City FC.

The Reds are riding a three-game winning streak heading into Saturday’s fixture and can make it four wins in a row for the first time in club history.

It won’t be easy. Nothing really is in this league. Jason Kreis’s side is coming off two consecutive wins of their own, and have David Villa at his highest level since joining the expansion outfit.

Here are three keys for Saturday night’s match against NYCFC.

NYCFC Last, But Not Least

Though they are languishing in the basement of the Eastern Conference and coming off a tough loss on penalties, New York City FC isn’t exactly your average expansion side. David Villa and Mix Diskerud could slot into any starting eleven in MLS.

Still, NYFC have accrued just 14 points through 15 games and were knocked off by the NASL’s New York Cosmos in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup.

However, TFC’s players remain wary of a side that is beginning to find their form in the league after two straight wins.

“They’ve had a rough start to the season, but they’re definitely a squad that has a lot of talent in it,” said midfielder Collen Warner.

“Although they haven’t had the best record so far they’re a dangerous team.”

Though defensively NYCFC remains a work in progress, improved play from the likes of Patrick Mullins, Thomas McNamara and Mehdi Ballouchy has helped City beat two teams, Philadelphia and Montreal, they hope to pass in the standings rather quickly.

Squad Depth

It’s been a while, not since the beginning of the season in Vancouver, that Greg Vanney has had a full squad at his disposal.

Though that isn’t the case yet, the Reds are closer than ever to getting back to that point. Robbie Findley has recovered from a foot injury and was a full participant in training this week.

Steven Caldwell was on the field with his teammates throughout the week. While he wasn’t a full participant in training, he did begin to get touches on the ball and conduct sprints. His return appears closer than ever.

Vanney will have some decisions to make when it comes to the starting lineup against New York. Does he get Joe Bendik a start ahead of a busy three-game stretch? Does Warren Creavalle remain on the right of the midfield diamond, or will Collen Warner retake that spot after Michael Bradley’s return from international duty.

These are good problems to have and it appears TFC will need as many healthy and viable options they can get with the Gold Cup approaching.

Midfield Battle

Yes, we can talk about the star power up front on both teams but this game will be won or lost between the boxes.

Jozy Altidore, Sebastian Giovinco and Villa are certainly capable of creating something out of nothing but we will focus in on the less sexy matchups.

Andrew Jacobson versus Michael Bradley will be one to watch. The Reds captain is coming off a superb two-game stretch with the U.S. national team and is arguably at the peak of his powers.

How well can Jacobson protect a porous back four with Bradley charging at him and Giovinco and Altidore buzzing in between the channels?
