The Charlotte Eagles defeated Wilmington Hammerheads FC 2-0 at Legion Stadium on Saturday night. Midfielders Wells Thompson and Drew Yates led the Eagles to victory with one goal each in the second half.

Midfielder Daniel Lovitz had several shots on Eagles goalkeeper Brock Duckworth throughout the night, but none found the back of the net to give the Hammerheads the points they needed to find the overall victory that would continue their undefeated streak.

The Hammerheads had a close opportunity on goal as halftime closed in off a header by Sammy Ochoa in the penalty area from a volley by Lovitz. The Eagles were given the chance to increase the score soon after with minutes left in the first half off a free kick just feet above the penalty box.

The first goal of the match came in the 57th minute as Eagles midfielder Wells Thompson found the open gap outside the penalty area and took the shot. Defender Jonathan Leathers attempted a shot in the 65th minute that was saved off a dive by Hammerheads goalkeeper Quillan Roberts.

Lovitz had the fans on their feet with two of his best goal attempts of the night with a diving header in the box near the low post and a hard shot from outside the penalty area with 10 minutes remaining in the match, both saved by finger tips of Duckworth.

The final goal of the match was in the 90th minute off a shot by Eagles midfielder Drew Yates, increasing the score to 2-0 seconds before the final whistle.
