Academy Gains Global Experience

U17s 2013 Ajax

Kia Toronto FC Academy finished sixth at the AEGON Future Cup 2013 in Amsterdam, Netherlands as part of their preseason run of games.

The Academy U17 team was in Group A with host Ajax, Brazil’s Sao Paulo and English side Tottenham. The young Reds dropped a 1-0 decision to Ajax in the opening match before bouncing back to beat Tottenham by the same margin. In the final group match Sao Paul beat the Reds 2-0 to drop Toronto to the fifth place game at the end of group play.

Group B third place finisher Bayern Munich stood in the way of fifth place. The Germans defeated Toronto 3-0 on Monday. Other teams in Group B were eventual tournament winner Anderlecht, Benfica and Barcelona. Ajax finished second and Benfica took the bronze beating Sao Paulo. Toronto took sixth place behind Bayern, placing ahead of Tottenham and Barcelona.

Toronto was the only North American team represented at the prestigious AEGON Future Cup, which annually attracts some of the top academy teams worldwide.
