Plata Traded For Pick

Joao Plata

Toronto FC announced Wednesday the club acquired a second round pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft from Real Salt Lake in exchange for forward Joao Plata.

“While Plata is a player our fans enjoyed watching, he did not figure in our plans moving forward,” said Toronto FC President and General Manager Kevin Payne. "It made sense for our club to move him for value as we can continue to build the team we want. We'd like to thank him for his contributions to the club and wish him all the best with his new team."

Plata, 20, was drafted in the third round (49th overall) in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. The Ecuadorian made 52 appearances in all competitions scoring 10 goals for Toronto FC.  He was awarded the 2011 George Gross Memorial Trophy after being named the 2011 Nutrilite Canadian Championship M.V.P. In July 2012, he was sent to Ecuadorian side LDU Quito on a six month loan deal.

Toronto FC travels to Orlando on Friday to continue preseason ahead of the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic tournament.
