Toronto FC announced Thursday the club has selected Emery Welshman with the sixteenth overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft.

Prior to selecting Welshman, Toronto FC made two trades. The first deal with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC where the Reds acquired the tenth overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft along with allocation money in exchange for the fourth overall pick. Toronto then sent the tenth overall pick to the Seattle Sounders FC for the sixteenth overall pick and allocation money.

“Emery is a superior athlete with a great deal of potential,” said Toronto FC President and General Manager Kevin Payne. “He’s strong and fast and has the ability to support the team out wide or up front.

“We’re very pleased with the outcome of today’s SuperDraft for Toronto FC. We accomplished what we set out to do.”

Welshman, 21, spent the past two seasons at Oregon State, appearing in 35 games for the Beavers, scoring 13 goals and adding 11 assists. He was named to the First Team All-Pac 12 team in 2011 and in 2012 and led the Pac-12 Conference in goals scored in 2012.

Prior to joining the Beavers, Welshman began his collegiate career at Siena College. He made 35 appearances, scoring 19 goals and adding six assists for the Saints. In 2010 he was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Year as well as leading the conference in goals scored. Prior to his collegiate career, Welshman played his youth soccer with the Sigma Elite Training Centre program

Toronto FC will open its 2013 Major League Soccer preseason Saturday, January 19 in Toronto.
