Day 10: A Pick-Up Game

Day 10 of TFC//TWELVE provided an opportunity to connect with a unique community group that is committed to making sure Toronto urban fruit doesn’t go to waste.

Not Far From The Tree is a downtown-based organization that puts the city's fruit to good use.  With over 1,200 volunteers, Not Far From The Tree picks fruit trees and shares it with neighbourhoods from High Park to Victoria Park and Lakeshore to Eglinton.

Here's how it works: when a homeowner can’t keep up with the abundant harvest produced by their tree, they register with Not Far From The Tree. Volunteers are then mobilized to pick and share the harvest in three ways; offered to the tree owner, shared among the volunteers and delivered by bicycle and donated to food banks, shelters, and community kitchens in the neighbourhood.

Inspired by this creative mission, Toronto FC players Stefan Frei, Ty Harden and Quillan Roberts, staff and fans tackled an apple tree branch by branch.  Three hours, four minutes, 14 bags and 219lbs later every single apple had been collected.

Toronto FC thanks Not Far From The Tree for their ingenuity and dedication to making the city of Toronto a better place.
