TORONTO – Andrew Wiedeman’s first reaction when he felt Kei Kamara’s free kick deflect off his thigh was that it could be a good thing.

That feeling didn’t last long, though.

In the TFC wall at the 83rd minute when Kamara lined up to take what would be the game-winning free kick, Wiedeman watched as the ball skipped on the ground and went in off the fingertips of goalkeeper Milos Kocic.

 “When you’re on the wall, you want to get your body on it, so initially it’s good,” Wiedeman told MLSsoccer.com. “I felt, at the time, all right. Hopefully it was enough to put it wide or something.

But when I turned and saw the ball heading into the back of the net, [it was] a pretty helpless sort of feeling. It’s definitely a sinking feeling.”

It was the only goal of the game and it gave Toronto FC their third loss in their past four games with only one draw to show for their efforts.

“It definitely changed direction,” Wiedeman said. “That’s probably the worst thing that can happen to the goalie. You get your feet set for the ball, you see it coming in one way and it keeps coming in so fast. And if it changes direction, it throws you completely off. “

The disappointing part for Toronto FC is that the goal came at a time when they were probably playing their best in what was a sloppy game for both sides.

In the end, though, that didn’t matter as the home side just couldn’t recover from an unlucky break and the lack of a cutting edge.

“It was definitely a tale of two halves,” Wiedeman said. “I think they dominated the first half. I thought we probably had the better of the play going forward in the second half…

“We were putting them under a lot of good pressure. [It’s] unfortunate but they’re one of the best teams in the league and one of the favorites to possibly make a run at taking the whole thing, so there are a lot of positives to take out of it.”
