Day 5: Feeding The Hungry

The fifth day of TFC//TWELVE puts the spotlight on Second Harvest, an organization that aims to feed hungry people through daily collection and delivery of excess fresh foods to various social service agencies in Toronto.

Second Harvest's vision is that “no one need ever go hungry in the communities we serve."

Started in 1985, Second Harvest works with grocery retailers, food manufacturers, food distributors, the Ontario Food Terminal, St. Lawrence Market, event planners, hotels and restaurants to prevent good food from going to waste, according to its website.

Since its start, Second Harvest has collected and delivered more than 70 million pounds of food that could have otherwise gone to waste, to over 200 community agencies. This is "the core" of their work, called the
Food Rescue & Delivery Program
.

Toronto FC Goalkeeper Quillan Roberts and front office staff joined the MLSE Hunger Squad to collect food donations on foot from a local bakery, a café and retail stores and delivered the food to a nearby community agency.

TFC would like to thank Second Harvest and the local food businesses for providing such an important service to our community.
