Will TFC See A Different Galaxy?

David Beckham & Joao Plata

Fresh off his MLS Cup Final triumph old rumours about Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder David Beckham heading to France have resurfaced hotter than ever.

On Friday, an AFP report out of London states “Paris St Germain have put together an attractive offer,” and that money is "no object for their Qatari owners." The contract is reportedly worth an astonishing $18 million (Cdn) for just 18 months of work.

Toronto FC won’t worry so much about where Beckham lands, but will have to keep an eye on what Los Angeles does should the superstar decide to leave ahead of the two-leg CONCACAF Champions League clash between the sides on March 7 & 14.

The Reds will host the first leg of the CCL quarterfinal series. Although TFC knows a great deal about the league and cup champion having drawn them 0-0 and 2-2 in 2011, Beckham’s departure would raise intriguing questions about a possible change in style with LA using the salary cap relief to sign new players, or another big-name talent to complement Irish international Robbie Keane and MLS Cup Final MVP Landon Donovan.

At this point Los Angeles remains convinced that they can keep the Englishman for another year.

MLSsoccer.com quoted Tim Leiweke – President of LA Galaxy owner AEG – saying “I believe David will be here again next year,” but this statement was made last month while it seems PSG has raised the stakes in its pursuit of Beckham in recent days.

Regardless of how LA’s latest Beckham saga unfolds, Toronto has its own roster to shape before the Champions League match. On Wednesday, the Reds released seven players largely from its Reserve side as head coach Aron Winter begins to address the depth of his squad.
