Wynne may make Rapids debut Friday in LA

Rapids manager Gary Smith may start Marvell Wynne in the season opener

Wednesday’s trade did not go down well at all with Marvell Wynne.

“I knew nothing about this,” Wynne said from the team’s hotel late Thursday night. “I have just bought a place in Toronto and was not planning to move. It came out of nowhere.”

Wynne was traded from Toronto FC to the Colorado Rapids on Thursday for midfielder Nick LaBrocca and a 2011 third round draft pick. The right back was entering his fourth season in Toronto. Friday night he could see his first action for the Rapids in their 2010 season opener vs. Chivas USA (10:30 p.m. E.S.T.).

The move did not exactly catch everyone by surprise. On Monday, March 22 the Toronto Sun reported that Wynne had fallen out of favor with Preki, although the reason remains unclear.

Whether Wynne moves straight into the starting line-up or not for Colorado will only be revealed tonight in Los Angeles. Wynne said he spoke briefly with Rapids head coach Gary Smith and assured him he was in good physical condition.

“I don’t have any injuries, I’m feeling good,” Wynne said.

Colorado’s Kosuke Kimura had been the leading candidate at right back during preseason. However, Smith said yesterday he also envisaged Wynne potentially sliding into a more central position. Whatever the case, Colorado will be armed with some very speedy fullbacks including Danny Earls on the left.
