A youth product of Barcelona (Ecuador) and Alfaro Moreno Academia, Joao Plata has been with LDU Quito since 2009, when he joined the club's U-18 squad.
The following year, he made seven appearances for the full LDU team, starting five matches and scoring one goal, a matchwinner against ESPOLI in September. LDU went on to be crowned Ecuadorian champions.
He has also appeared for the Ecuadorian U-20 team.
Short and quick, Plata has the skills and the creativity to be a constant threat. He can score with both feet and create chances for others. His combination of a diminutive stature and crafty pace has drawn comparisons to MLSers like Andy Najar and Dane Richards.
Plata was the leading scorer at the 2011 MLS Combine.
