Stage 1 of the 2012 MLS Re-Entry Process finished as expected, with little activity.

After Toronto FC passed on its first overall selection, only one player was chosen by the remaining 18 teams. Chicago Fire used its turn at number 11 to pick former TFC forward Maicon Santos from D.C. United.

This means Chicago picks up Maicon’s 2013 contract option, usually the obstacle that keeps most teams waiting until Stage 2, which is when contracts can be negotiated.

Several players initially available, withdrew prior to the draft and some re-signed with their existing teams. This was the least active Stage 1 since the Re-Entry Draft was introduced in 2010. That year two players were selected on the first day and in 2011 three players saw their contracts switch clubs.

A combined total of 21 players were picked in Stage 2 in the previous two years. This process takes place on December 14.

Toronto holds the first overall pick again next Friday.
