Pumas Edges Toronto On Points

A 1-0 win by Pumas UNAM over Tauro F.C. on Wednesday night means the Mexican Clausura winner will finish ahead of Toronto FC in Group C of the 2011/12 CONCACAF Champions League. Pumas and Toronto will now wait to discover their next round opponents. The quarterfinals begin in March of 2012.

Toronto beat Dallas 3-0 on Tuesday to secure passage to the quarterfinals with 10 points from six games, but its run at the top of the group lasted just 24-hours as Pumas edged ahead with 11. Crashing out of the tournament, Dallas finished third with seven points and Tauro is last with five.

Group D has also been decided with last year’s Champions League winner Monterrey of Mexico and U.S. Open Cup victor Seattle going through in that order.

With the Canadian and U.S. Open champions through, MLS teams that entered the tournament via regular season and Cup Final have their continental ambitions hanging in the balance.

MLS Cup winner Colorado could be ousted from CCL if either one of Metapan or Real Espana wins their game on Thursday night. A draw in that match will allow Colorado to join Santos Laguna in the quarterfinals from Group B.

The team Colorado defeated in MLS Cup Final, Dallas, went out Tuesday night to Toronto.

In Group A, only a Los Angeles Galaxy victory over Motagua will allow the 2010 MLS regular season (Supporters’ Shield) champion to advance into the final eight. Alajuelense has a three point edge over LA Galaxy, but it’s all there for the taking Thursday night for Bruce Arena’s superstars. LA takes on winless Motagua and holds the head-to-head tie-breaker over Alajuelense. Mexican side Morelia has already gone through in Group A.

Teams that have advanced to 2011/12 CCL Quarterfinals

Group A: Morelia (Mexico)
Group B: Santos Laguna (Mexico)
Group C: Pumas (Mexico), Toronto (Canada)
Group D: Monterrey (Mexico), Seattle (USA)
